Damn, NewGuy doesn’t even show up until next week and you’re already wishing him gone? For one thing, that’s Dr. NewGuy to you. Two, he’s played by ‘The Unit’s Max Martini. And three: To answer your query, he’s only around for three episodes – though they are scattered throughout this run of new episodes.

You will be correct… eventually. “Jennifer Beals is back (as Cal’s ex-wife) for a couple more episodes, before I hijack her for my new Fox show,” says exec producer Shawn Ryan.

Fancast: Lie To Me Boss Sees ‘Opportunity’ With Summer Slot

Fancast’s Matt Mittovich interviewed Shawn Ryan and discussed his thoughts on coming back from the hiatus, and being scheduled in the fall. Kudos to Matt for pointing out that Lie to Me was scheduled against “obscenely tough competition” previously, with “Dancing Wtih the Stars”, “Two and a Half Men”, “Big Bang Theory”, and “Monday Night Football”.

Shawn Ryan said that originally he had “mixed feelings” about the hiatus and the new time slot, “because traditionally [summer] has been a burn-off spot” for shows. “But”, he continues, “When I was told that they were pairing us with ‘The Good Guys’ (starring Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks), which I knew was an important element in their schedule… I chose to look at the glass half full. Now we have a chance to attract some audience attention and get some eyeballs that maybe were tuning into other things during the fall. I’m definitely looking at it as an opportunity more than a punishment.”

Shawn says that the second season, of which 12 episodes are yet to air, will conclude with a “really strong” stretch “that will launch the show into the third season”.

At your bequest, I asked exec producer Shawn Ryan about that sure-to-entertain episode, titled “Pied Piper” and airing August 16. He said, “That is during our very special ‘Shield’ reunion,” in which a half dozen cast members from Ryan’s acclaimed series pop up on ‘Lie to Me.’ “For a good reason – he has his motivations – Cal checks himself into a psych ward, and maybe fits in a little too well.”

My answer is a qualified yes. A while back, I told you how the 12 new episodes kicking off June 7 include a flashback to when Lightman and Foster first met, back at the Pentagon. That hour, Shawn Ryan says, will shed light on the duo’s dynamic, though he stops short of putting them in that “Will they/won’t they” hole: “I don’t necessarily want to label it romance, but their relationship deepens in a way that I think the audience will find satisfying.”

In the meantime, he’s a casting scoop to tide you over: Torres’ younger sister, who I first told you about in December, will be played by Alyssa Diaz (’As the World Turns’).

It’s still on its winter/spring hiatus, and “the return air date is still unknown,” series creator Shawn Ryan recently Tweeted. His best guess is that Season 2 will resume “in May/June.”

Richard Burgi To Guest on Lie to Me

Actor Richard Burgi has been cast to play the character of state Governor and Presidential “aspirant”, Charles Brooks. The character will appear in episode 16 of season two, when Lie to Me returns later this spring. He was the apparent target of an assassination attempt that instead left a young woman dead. Lightman takes the case after being “prodded” by Clara Martin, the character played by multi-ep guest star Melissa George, and soon discovers the “attempt” is not all that it seems.

When the Fox series returns, get ready for “When Cal Met Gillian.” Says Kelli Williams of the flashback-filled episode, “We go into their life at the Pentagon when they first met and how that started.” How did the two get on at first? Kelli teased, “It’s a tense situation when they meet.” ‘Lie to Me’ is expected back in the late spring, where it possibly will be paired with ‘Code 58,’ the new cop drama fronted by Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks.
