Fabulous. :) I enjoyed it a lot. I liked seeing Lightman deal with his doubt and lack control over the situation. It was interesting, nice character involvement from the whole cast and a fun episode. A few niggles about procedural stuff but I can suspend disbelief. :)

Sorry 3rdrocker and Celtic…I think this was my least favorite episode of them all. I’ve just been very disappointed with this show overall, I miss the playful interaction of Gillian and Lightman…amongst other things. In fact, I even cancelled my amazon video on demand automatic subscription to the show after tonight’s episode. I miss the truly suspenseful plot twists…the brother thing was obvious from the very first time he confronted Gillian. The Lightman groupees have become whiny sniveling wet rag tagalongs, with no other purpose than to cause Lightman to put them down in some way shape or form. Ah well, I’ll keep watching for free on Hulu for now, with high hopes for a return to the more cerebral plots of episodes past. Glad others liked it…hopefully that will keep the show on for a while longer!

@Diva459
Thank you. One of the reasons I can hardly stand to read through this blog anymore is because of the flood of groupies that post nothing but OMGZ AMAZING LAWL CALLIAN!!!!
I, too, think that the brother-thing was obvious from the moment he appeared on screen (did we really need the line about “voice-prints” that early in the episode?)
Season 1 blew me away, and the first half of Season 2 hardly disappointed. Past that… I mirror your sentiments completely – including the bit about keeping the show on for as long as possible. I still want to see where this goes.

I don’t see a problem with posting “Callian” on this blog.
Some people are after suspense while some aren’t. The Lightman/Foster relationship is probably the biggest attraction of this show.
Though I have to admit. Season 1 is excellent. Season 2 is disappointing. No matter how hard the writers try to play around with Lightman/Foster it just doesn’t match up with the chemistry in Season 1.
And I do kind of miss the science factor. I don’t really want Lightman to crack cases all the time and fight with the police. Nor do I want him to have sex interests all day long.
Anyway the promo for next week is out and I like it. For Callian shippers, you’d most probably ooo aaahhh and LOVE it.

OMGZ AMAZING LAWL CALLIAN!!!!
Yes, we’re the groupies. But hey, us watching is what keeps the show going!

OK I guess I should consider myself a bit of a groupie too, although I didn’t think this episode was “OMGZ AMAZING LAWL” or anything :P
But I’m really looking forward to next week, and the week after. I think you are right though, I sort of miss the sciency parts of season 1, and Loker and Torres being more than just some people who don’t do much, but eh.
I do like the developments, if you can call them that, between Cal and GIllian. I guess season 1 and the first part of season 2 was more about friendship, and now, with Dr Burns, the girl who became an understudy for a few episodes (Carla? Cayla? Something like that), it’s a bit more of romantic/sexual tension. I like that too, so I’m not really complaining about that!
August 17, 2010 @ 10:47 am
elisa
maybe not OMGZ AMAZING LAWL but definitely very very excited :)
it’s true that the reason i watch the show is the callian chemistry, and that if it weren’t there i wouldn’t be watching the show.
but i also am slightly disappointed at how the show is going from a scientific process to a violent fbi investigation
August 17, 2010 @ 11:14 am
Oh well, can’t please everybody, apparently. There’s always “Bachelor Pad” for those who don’t like intelligent TV. I’ll continue to “OMGZ AMAZING LAWL CALLIAN”, whatever LAWL means, and be the Lightman Groupie I am. There’s nothing wrong with getting excited about your favorite show, and it’s not entirely about the relationships for me; the writing is excellent. Lie to Me’s the only scripted show I find worthy of watching, actually.

Wow, I didn’t expect to see people complain about this episode. Even though I also figured out the brother thing before it was revealed I loved the concept of this episode. This might just be because I love the creepy stuff (sorry, I’m a little weird). Season 1 drew me in, but Season 2 has definitely turned the show into my favorite on tv. I love delving into the characters and how they react to each other as a viewer and as an aspiring writer. I can see how you’d be disappointed if you loved the focus on the science. Hopefully season 3 will find a balance for all of us. Keep in mind this show has endured a lot of jostling behind the scenes. Next season could be completely different.
P.S. “OMGZ AMAZING LAWL CALLIAN” NEXT WEEK! Haha, I couldn’t resist.

I agree with Canada above, season 1 was the hook and season 2 was when it became my fav show! I love that its not as science heavy this season; sometimes that can overwhelm the plot. I liked the episode, besides the obvious plot twist, because it dealt with the emotional side of it very well.
It’s not always about having the most interesting case, the characters are the best thing about that show and I think they get the best reviews when they do a very character based episode. Tim Roth has even said he prefers season 2 because of the development of the characters. That being said, if you preferred it with more science I don’t see them changing it back.
Oh and the “OMGZ AMAZING LAWL CALLIAN!!!!” people are the people who work hard to contact FOX and make sure they know the show has a huge following and to encourage them to keep it on the air, including contacting the show’s sponsors to ensure a full season 3. Is LAWL actually a saying?

I think this epi was okay. The case wasn’t that interesting for me either. But I liked some scences e. g. the Gillian/Zoe moment and when Emily tries to figure out why her parents got married.
IMO not so good: Cal’s doubts – would’ve loved to see him more struggle or someday actually fail.
No real conversation about his issues neighter with Gill nor Zoe. We see Zoe complaining about but at the end all is fine?
And what was the freaky call about “Where is Emily” for? Nobody went after her, right?
Sorry for my English, I’m no native.

Celtic
@Diva – interestingly enough i didn’t like the first half of season 2 because of all the cal-gillian stuff and I didn’t see it a lot in this episode, thankfully. We saw more of Loker being involved in the case and more of the other characters in general and they were also all stronger in this ep than in others recently. I like seeing the more human side of them and I liked, as I said in the first post, that Cal had to face doubts. This second half of the season has been far better than the first. Yes, the brother thing was obvious, but that was not what kept me interested in the episode. I enjoyed it. :)
August 17, 2010 @ 3:08 pm
Goodness – apparently I wasn’t clear enough.
I am not so naive that I would dare undercut the loyal fan base that follows the show so passionately – I definitely understand how vital your support is to the continuation of the show, and I appreciate it (truly).
@Kim Zagar Mendoza – if you think that my comments indicated that I don’t appreciate “intelligent” TV, you should re-read my comment, as well as the other bits I’ve posted here and there on the site. The intelligence of this show is what drew me in in the first place, so to say that I don’t appreciate it comes off as kind of ignorant. :-/
And perhaps I’m out of my demographic a bit (apologies) – ‘lawl’ = ‘lol’ (say it out loud :P ).
I guess what I’m really trying to say is just that there is a STARK difference (not bad, not good; just different) between the show and this site, and the types of comments being posted just aren’t my cup o’ tea. Back into the shadows of the message board I go… :)

I loved the scene between Gillian and Zoe I would love to see more behind the dynamic of their relationship with respect to Cal and Zoe’s take on Gillian’s place in her daughters life.

I thought it was a solid episode. I like the recent episodes a lot, although my favorites are still Grievous Bodily Harm, Tractor Man, Beat the Devil, Sweet Sixteen. I also loved season one. I watch the show mainly for TR as Cal. I love the actor and the character. I really like learning about Cal’s past.
I am VERY happy they haven’t gone with the office relationship angle. That would really turn me off. It’s not interesting for either character and having two adults of the opposite gender actually be best friends and work together is a nice change.

I loved this episode. Imo, this show is getting better and better. I think it has progressed nicely from Season 1 and we are getting a good mixture of science and character development. There is probably really only so much science they can teach us…
I can’t wait for next week. And if I squee and lawl, then all the better!
August 17, 2010 @ 4:59 pm

I too wish they would involve a little more of the science! I feel like they pretty much deleted that aspect! I have a friend who dislikes episodes that are more science based! It just goes to show that different people like different things and LTM cant please everyone all at once! Just hold on a little… it will get better!
PS: I am so looking forward to next weeks episode!

Personally, (since there happens to be this big debate) I think that they did a whole lotta science based episodes in the 1st season… to try it out… then they got in depth with the characters and their relationships in the 2nd season… so the 3rd season will probably be where they even it all out. I think that this past episode… “Pied Piper” was an amazing episode… and even if it was obvious from the beginning that it was the brother… that doesn’t automatically make the whole episode bad. I think the writers did a wonderful job and i am very happy that Emily has been in the episodes more… is she now a permenant character? I hope! I was also happy that they included Loker more in this episode.
I am a HUGE Callian fan and i am super duper excited for this next episode. It going to be very good, especially for the Callian fans, i can tell. The writers have gotten much better. I’m not sure what happened… but 1st season was friggin awesome. The 1st half of the second was kind of falling apart with some AWESOME episodes in there… and the second half started off kind of rough but they are really getting back on. I really wasnt a fan of “The Whole Truth” Im not sure why but it just kind of annoyed me that the episode was very much about sex and not really the science. It just doesn’t seem like a good place to go with Lie to Me*. But then i REALLY liked “Sweet Sixteen” They did a wonderful job going into Cal and Gillians past and with including all of the characters. That would have to be one of my favorite episodes… right there with “Honey”
I think Lie to Me* is doing a great job and i hope it stays on TV for a while. They have great writers and great actors… And i will say that i am a Lightman Groupie. I LOVE him and his character. As i said before I am very excited for next week. I would like to see Cal’s jealous side again. Also, I’m not sure who said it up there (^) but they were sayng how Cal NEVER fails… and I agree that… nobody is perfect and he should mess up some time… I mean they make him seem like a god… and he isnt… So if the writers are reading this…. (Work on that maybe? Thanks!)

@AKASpeedo i completly agree i think it would be refreshing for the two main characters to stay apart however it does not mean they should not exlore the dynamic more and develope it furthur. Best friends of the opposite sex comfort each other in different was between some it is more intimate (no i dont mean sex) and i think that is the case between cal and gillian. he is happy when she is happy and vice versa i would love to see more of that.

I don’t know how many will agree, but I thought we learned a lot of science in “Pied Piper.” There wasn’t a new facial expression to learn, but we did learn that depressives draw in on themselves, while paranoids look around the room, as well as how to tell who has the dominant personality in a photograph. I found that really interesting.
A lot of people are acting like the science isn’t there at all, and it is. We still learn something every week, I just think that they don’t put the science on parade as much as they used to.
This wasn’t my favorite episode, but it had some really good parts. I especially loved the interaction between Zoe and Gillian, which was unexpected and very rewarding. I also loved the bet between Ben and Cal. And of course, every scene with Emily was fantastic.

Just want to pipe in here real quick guys. I think everyone’s doing a pretty good job of being respectful of other people’s opinions. I encourage you to continue to do that. The beauty of opinions is they’re just that: opinions. They may vary from one person to the next, but it doesn’t make them “wrong”, per se. They are how that particular person views things. That is what makes an opinion. ;) So, let’s keep things positive, and hopefully everyone will continue to feel free to share their thoughts and opinions.
Second: There seems to be a lot of comments about the science element on the show. I thought you guys might enjoy reading this interview I did with Sarah Fain back in February. Though she won’t be a writer or EP on the show come season three, (she now works on The Vampire Diaries), she was throughout season two, and it should give you some insight on how they try to balance the science and the stories:

All…if my “Lightman Groupee” comment got taken out of context as referring to those here on the board being groupies…it has nothing to do with anyone here…I was referring to Gillian, Loker, Torres, and Pfifer’s character on the show acting like Lightman Groupees…whatever thoughts they have to help always seem to be the wrong ones, they basically look like fools in the end for whatever they try to do…Every episode has the exact same plot, regardless of the story line….Cal has a problem from his past…Gillian doubts him briefly, Torres or Loker does something a little stupid (or a lot), and drags the other one with them, then in the end, of course, Cal is right, and they all come sheepishly back again to let him know they are behind him 100%. Science or no, Romance or no, we always know what the show will hold now…Lightman being a complete arse, but the end of being right will always justify the means.
@Celtic, I guess we keep our friendly diversity going…I didn’t think the supporting characters were any stronger in this episode. But maybe I’ll watch again and see if my mind changes at all. Cal didn’t face his doubts for long, he knew very shortly into the episode that he was right…even if he didn’t have the full story complete. We never even saw him feel guilty. After all, he did say that he didn’t want to stop the execution because the guy was innocent, he saw something in his face he didn’t understand, and hadn’t seen before…saw some truth that led him to believe that someone else may have been involved. I’m not sure we saw him truly doubting himself at all. We just saw Zoe’s doubts reflected for a while, and Gillian doubting as well. And Cal hates it when Gillian doubts him.
I used to be a non-shipper, then flipped to shipping for a while, but now after what they have turned Lightman into, I am definitely no longer in the ship category. I’m with Celtic on that one, for sure!
Ah, well, it’s all good…variety is the spice of life…I enjoy the good-hearted fun of a lively and friendly debate!
Aloha

I would have to say that the show is doing great… lol… I think that Lightman needs to be less of a god sometimes… because he is ALWAYS right ine very episode and he never doubts himself or does something wrong… and he should… nobody’s perfect… not even him. I have reallt liked all the episodes but after seeing this one it reminded me of how “good” he is and he shouldnt be. And i guess it seems like im just rambling on but yeah… ^.^
August 18, 2010 @ 7:54 pm
Celtic
@Diva – yes, friendly debate is always good.
I think we did see Cal doubt. Emily asked him specifically if he could have made a mistake (might not be her exact words) and he didn’t know. But he does also believe in the process and his own ability in general and so that would lead him to look for other avenues.
It is interesting how people complain about him being too good, but really, the company was founded on his skills and he would have to be able to prove his science over and over again to be able to have any sucess. He is a very flawed individual, as we are shown numerous times, who just happens to be good at what he is an expert in. The rest of the time he is muddling along like everyone else.
August 19, 2010 @ 2:45 am
Diva459 (aka the other Kate)
@Celtic…I agree totally with you…I think they’ve shown Lightman to be totally imperfect, with one redeeming quality…his ability to read people. AND there was an episode where he made a mistake…the one where we go back in time to see him meet Gillian for the first time, he blew it with the whole terrorist thing..wanted the guy dead, but then realized that he was dealing with dirty gov’t who botched the job…he felt directly responsible for the death of that man’s family…remember, he never answered the question of whether or not could he forgive himself, when Gillian asked. I think he ‘muddles’ more than most when he’s not doing his expertise thing.
I just wish that his skills weren’t the only ones we see…obviously Foster has some great skills that we don’t get to see…in the first season we saw a little of Loker’s and Torres’, but this season, they are just kinda bumbling idiots who can’t think for themselves, or when they do, they come off as idiots.
August 19, 2010 @ 3:30 am
AJ
@Celtic… Wow… good point… i guess i never thought of it like that. So yea i guess he just good at what he does and he does have week spots in other things.
@Diva… Yea that is a good example… and i agree that they dont show the other characters talent as much. Loker got a big chance in “Secret Santa” when he was studying group behavior. So they get there chances but not many… And i guess he messed up 17 years ago when he picked the wrong man…

@ Kate: Once again, you do a great job!! Thanks for re-posting the interview with Sarah Fain!!! Was interesting to read cos like some others I also missed the science in S2 which made me love Lie to Me back in S1! So I started to wonder why the writers seemed to neglect that part of the show this season, I know why now :-) Hope they find the balance in S3 though…

I do agree with a lot of you, the show has lost a sense of suspense. I however am very aware that the effect, strength, surprise created in a twist for procedural shows like this one decreases as one becomes aware of show style and character development. I imagine that a lot of you also watch shows like Bones, NCIS, CSI; these introduce and conclude an event in its entirety in a 43 minute slot. I am not saying that this negates your opinion for that is what they are; I am merely introducing a consideration.
I did like the emotional and character aspects of this episode. I find the interaction of Gillian and Zoe fascinating and would love to see more into Zoe’s opinion on Gillian’s role in Emily’s life. I think we will be seeing more of the Gillian and Cal banter again soon and I also think that the show will develop Eli and Ria’s characters roles more.
