Season Three Brings a New “Interest” For Lie to Me’s Cal Lightman

22 July 2010 at 10:35 pm

For that vast sea of “Callian” (Cal/Gillian) shippers out there: your excitement for a third season may have to be tempered by news of a new character that’s being introduced in season three. The character, Detective Wallowski, will be played by Monique Curnen. She’s going to be a “sexual interest” for Cal, and she “drives a wedge between him and Dr. Gillian Foster”. What type of character is she? “A great cop with a street edge and a fast subversive mind”. So what do you think? Excited? Disappointed? Indifferent? Sound off below.

NOTE: As tamuag99 pointed out in the comments, this character is listed as “recurring”. She’s not a regular character. I thought this was clear from the writeup, I apologize if it wasn’t. In addition, Dan Sackheim had revealed a little about the character via Twitter before this casting news. Here’s the scoop he gave, a follower’s question, and finally Dan’s response:

@DanSackheim: “In season 3, Lightman will be shaking off the constraints of his contract with the FBI. As a result, he will find himself in a far less healthy, far more dangerous, alliance with a mystery cop. Stay tuned”

In reply, @DSS28 asked: “So in other words, Fox didn’t like the direction of the show with the FBI angle? What does this mean for Mekhi Phifer?”

@DanSackheim: “Read between the lines.”

As more information becomes available, it will be posted. But hopefully that clears things up, or at least connects the dots for some of you.

Umm, I’m not very excited about this. As a Callian fan, of course I’d like Lightman and Foster to be together. But, as I already said before, if this is not going to happen yet, then please let Gillian be the one seeing other people. I mean… why does he always get the sexual attention? Sounds like more of the same we have already seen.

I’m a little ticked off. Not because Cal and Gillian won’t be getting together anytime soon now, but because every woman that comes on the show is a ‘potential sexual/love interest’ for Cal. Give me a break. I hope they have some kind of ‘love interest’ in mind for Foster! Why should the ‘manwhore’ get all the action? ;-)

    July 22, 2010 @ 10:46 pm

  3. This time is Gillian who will be jealous… can’t wait!

    July 22, 2010 @ 11:13 pm

  4. Anna

    What vainillina and Sandy said.

I’d much rather see a boyfriend for Gillian come between them than a love interest for Cal. With Cal, it’s all going to be sex and danger, whereas a long-term boyfriend for Gillian might force them to address some of the emotional issues in their friendship/relationship (i.e. that mile high pedestal that Cal has set up for Gillian).

    gahhhhh.

i guess i don’t mind that there’s gonna be some jealousy, cause it only adds to the obvious fact that Cal & Gillian are def meant to be together. but another interest? come onnnnn. i just about die everyday waiting for some callian! but if i did get to pick, i agree with Anna, Sandy, & vainillina. i would much rather have Gillian with the relationship.

Lightman could use a love interest-and Foster should have one also. But the sparks between Foster and Lightman should never die out, but only get more intense, and almost forbidden! You know– right there-you crave it, you want it, but won’t allow yourself to give in to it. That would make things very interesting.Lightman’s a player, and very cocky, and it would be nice to see Foster crush him, just a little bit! :)

  7. Croquette

Also not very excited about this, but I’d rather see Lightman with someone than Foster with some long-time-idiotic-boyfriend…

Just get them together already! I’m not very optimistic about LTM getting more seasons than 4 and really don’t wanna see the same situation as in Stargate with Jack and Sam. Are they really that much affraid it’s gonna ruin the show?

All these cast additions, I don’t think they add to the show at all. Lightman has become a classless jerk for the most part, and I guess since they’re losing Jennifer Beals, they have to come up with someone else to take the heat…I just hope they keep Cal and Gillian’s friendship alive and special, and pure…yeah, there’s spark there, but the specialness of their relationship is what keeps the show going. I have to admit, I tire of the endless “sexual” interests for Cal. At least the new boyfriend guy for Gillian right now has some class, unlike Lightman.

  9. Aimée

Oh well. i don’t really mind it as long as they keep it interesting. Maybe she’s hot and they can start a three-way…lol.
Nah seriously though. I think they should focus on the characters that are already there. I mean we got a bit of Ria last week, but what about Loker and Reynolds?? They definitely have potential as characters! Get Loker out of the lab for once! Give them some more background rather than adding peeps to the staff! And don’t feed Cal’s ego so much ;)

really, to believe that Cal is a man easily…

I’m with Croquette on this one – with a Season 3 barely scheduled and Season 4 not likely, they’re goinng to waste more screentime on Cal the Manwhore crap?

If you need to use screentime, how about utilizing the characters you ALREADY HAVE. Loker? Ben? Torres?

It’s the Lightman GROUP, not the Lightman SHOW.

This may be the very thing that make me drop this show. LTM, meet Bones and House, the other to shows that TPTB f*cked up and I lost interest in.

What else did we expect? Lightman was already a jerk enough this season. Instead of making some decent changes the writers are making him a manwhore. Yeah sure, have sex with every woman that comes on. Notice that these new actresses are not boosting the ratings (the very thing they’re supposed to F-ing do).

I loved the show in season 1. I follow it in season 2 but it’s so boring and crap and full of Lightman sh*t I’m barely watching it anymore. And now season 3 with THIS? That’s it, byebye Lie to Me, you and your ONly character Lightman can go to hell.

Though I am very disappointed by this news… I kind of feel that Cal and Gil coming together would be closure for the show! Thats what makes me worried about House! I believe that all these intrests for Cal are separating them. Gil sees this and becomes disinterested, but when gil has a bf, Cal will always love her… but I think Gil will eventually give up on Cal! I kind of like what they had at the beginning of season 2! You could tell they cared about each other, but were afraid to make a move. Now they both have distractions… will it ever end?

Why do we have to keep proving that Lightman can’t keep it in his pants? I get that in order to keep the tension going between him and Foster, they have to introduce new interests, but hows about giving Foster some attention from the guys. Why not bring Rader back for a little flirtation – and a little Lightman jealousy? Why not give some backstory time to Loker or Reynolds? Aren’t there other ways of creating drama between Lightman and Foster without having Lightman shagging yet another piece of eye candy? What about Foster pulling away from the vortex of danger that is Cal Lightman, and what will he do about it? There’s your tension and drama all in one!

Wow, so disappointing – enough with the man-whoring already! I got hooked on this show because I liked the interaction of the existing cast – especially the interaction between Cal and Gillian. I don’t really want to watch Cal run around chasing tail, unless it’s Gillian’s! Plus, I have a hard time believing that the Cal from the end of Love Always and Honey would flaunt all of these meaningless diversions in front of Gillian – that really bugs me.

Since this show always seems to be on the verge of being canceled, I wish they would just get Cal and Gillian together, and get on with solving cases. Nothing has to change really ….. except the man-whoring! They practically acted like they were married in season 1, and that wasn’t a show killer. I don’t think a FEW more meaningful looks, or an arm around the shoulder scene would ruin the show. However, I think an endless parade of bimbos will.

Wow, hot topic. I’ve actually been really pleased with this season, and recall reading an interview with one of the major players (Shawn Ryan maybe) that the writers helped seal the deal for a Season 3 based on their ideas and what they wanted to do with the show. So I’m putting my faith in the writers. Maybe Cal makes a play for Gillian and she rejects him, so he moves on like he tells Clara you have to do at the end of The Whole Truth. That’s drama. Plus this girl is listed as “recurring,” not “regular.” She won’t be in every episode. There will still be special moments between Cal and Gillian – the writers won’t abandon that because it’s far too successful of a formula. And I kind of agree with one of the posters above who suggested Cal and Gillian together spells finale, although I don’t think that this has to be the case. I actually would really like to see them together and see the drama that creates, but I don’t think we’ll get that lucky.

I thought I’d be upset about this but I really ain’t. Cal’s interests tend to be superficial and just for fun and no matter how many women he jumps into bed with, his feelings for Gillian, which are pure and honest, will always be stronger than anything else. He has way too much respect for her than to play with her like he does with these girls. She’s the one thing (besides his daughter) that he holds most valuable. We get prove of that yet again in “Delinquent” when he says he won’t take unnecessary risks when it comes to her. He’d probably kill himself to protect her. There is one thing I have been sure of from the start: It’s not important how many “interests” each of them have because we know they love each other and nothing compares to the deep bond they share.

I agree with a lot of what all of you have been saying. I’m starting to get sick of all the Cal manwhoring about. Zoe, Helen, that Vegas chick, Clara. Enough! I desperately want Gillian and Cal to be together, but I also fear that would be the end of the show. I think we should get more Loker backstory. There hasn’t been much of him this season. We got little hints in the first season to some things, but now we’re lucky if he even gets 3 lines in the whole episode. I agree that we need to stop adding unnecessary characters and deal with what we have. But, I also watch LTM for the science. I absolutely adore the characters, and the cases. And that’s the reason it will take a lot of nonsense for me to stop watching LTM at all.

    July 23, 2010 @ 2:36 pm

  21. debbie

Sorry are we watching the same show guys? Manwhore? Cal didn’t do anything with Helen – she was from his past – he slipped up and slept with his ex, which is natural as he still has feelings for her. That leaves Poppy, a one night stand, and Clara, who he has only flirted with so far (next week’s ep suggests more, I know).

All of this, to my mind, does not make Cal a manwhore. It makes him a man. :-) He is single after all so is doing nothing wrong.

As far as Callian goes, bring it on. Give them as many love interests as desired. It’s the journey I find most satsifying. As long as the end game sees them together. If it doesn’t I will feel cheated and not happy at all!

“This may be the very thing that make me drop this show. LTM, meet Bones and House, the other to shows that TPTB f*cked up and I lost interest in.”

Are you serious? You dropped some great shows because they didn’t move fast even for you? Remember these things have to last several years, so to lose any sexual tension in the very beginnings of a show is just going to make it mundane to watch, and therefore kill it off.

Thank GOD you don’t produce/ write/ direct any TV shows. You’d have them down the loo as soon as they’re aired if you did!

I’m REALLY disappointed to read that Mekhi Phifer might not return for Season 3. I felt like his character could have been really interesting if they had spent a little time fleshing him out.

I agree with someone saying that this is the Lightman Group not the Lightman Show.

For your information, yeah sure TR is practially the only movie star and he should get the most spotlight. That doesn’t mean ALL the focus. So far there is absolutely NOTHING about the other characters and everything about him.

And how is he NOT a manwhore? Excuse me but shagging his own teacher (Helen) is not a normal thing to do, a manwhore does that. Shagging his ex-wife just for the sake of it isn’t normal either (Not that his wife is that normal, mind you). NEITHER is shagging suspects (Poppy, Clara). Yeah sure he didn’t have sex with Clara, but I’m certain if Foster didn’t freaking bump into him he would get into her pants. He’s that kind of person.

I totally detest the Lightman we’re seeing now. I don’t what Terror the writers will make him to be in season 3, but this is not accpetable. Mind you, I am a Callian shipper. But I wouldn’t want Foster to get it serious with someone who throws 1 million into a stupid roulette. They simply don’t match becase Lightman is simply not good enough for her. (Something he obviously knows very well).

    July 25, 2010 @ 9:22 am

  28. Curly

Sorry for my English but I’m German.
As long as the writers do it well I don’t have anything about a little tension between Foster and Lightman. I agree that the show wouldn’t be better with them as a couple by now. As long as they’ll end up together some day and we’ll see that happen I’m happy.

In the meantime I’d like to see a scene where both of them recognize that they have feelings for each other (maybe a kiss?). But they’re to afraid to admit it’s something more so they back down.

    July 26, 2010 @ 12:00 pm

I agree with Debbie actually. I hardly think that having a couple of flings throughout the year or flirting with people is being a man whore. It matches his character and quite honestly is far more refreshing to see than someone pining after the affections of another, i.e. Gillian, who blatently is not ready for that relationship with Cal. Personally, I would prefer they not get together and find relationships with others. Tension can be wonderful but a close working and living relationship would wreck their friendship and likely harm both of them very badly.

    July 26, 2010 @ 7:01 pm

  30. diva459

I’m a shipper at heart, but really, I think the friendship offers so much more depth for the show than an out right romance…but I wouldn’t call Cal’s flirting and flings “refreshing” for the show…more science and character development is what I crave from this show. That’s what made the show refreshing for me. It doesn’t need the “sex interests” to be a great show…I like seeing Foster get some romantic attention from guys like that Burns fellow…and I LOVED the banter in this past episode with Cal in discussing wine and Clara…I agree with Celtic that pining away after someone isn’t in Cal’s personality, and wouldn’t do much for the show. Though, I don’t think Cal is ready for that relationship with Gillian, either!!! (and I don’t think he ever will be, even though he wants it on some level…)

    Poppy
    Clara
And now again? Seriously? A new toy-girl for Cal?
I’m disappointed… Maybe I’ll stop watching the show for that…

  32. Julie

I am guessing (let me know if I am wrong) that everyone above me commenting on this season is a female. Am I right?

So that out of the way on to Cal. Not the Lightman Show. Really? TR isn’t the star? If it weren’t for TR and his acting there would be no LTM. Yes all the other actors are great ones (especially Emily! That girl is good!) but TR, as Cal, is the most fascinating. No one grabs an audience’s attention like Roth can. Actually if this show does end I would love to see TR in a few movies.

Callian. Yeah many people who know me know I am not a shipper (really I didn’t even know what that coined word was until it was used on twitter about 1 yr or so ago). Why? Not only would it ruin the obvious best friendship between Cal and Gillian, a romantic relationship between the two is absurd. They are so far from being a “love match”. Cal has no goal when it comes to relationships and Gillian’s goal (I would like her to show more interest in one) is more of a long term one should she decide to have one.

Let me ask a question here: Is the character Gillian an angel? An ideal that women should look up to or be? Perfect? In my opinion she is none of those things. I think there is more to Gillian than meets the eye and that would be an interesting path to take. She is a stoic person who has her feet on the ground, but she also seems to have an air or superiority about her when it comes to Cal. She digs at him about his “flirtations” and “flings”. Jealousy? No I don’t think so……more like “why do you lower yourself”. I don’t think it right to be judgmental about how people live their lives.

Cal. OMG! Manwhore? Really you guys want to use that word? Are we living in the dark ages? The man is single. He does what he likes and if the women he has these flings with agree to them who is harmed? Cal is not looking for some long term romantic relationship. Hell, I bet it was hard enough for him to stay married! @haileebot…..”chick”? So a woman who is interested in a man for sex is now a “chick”? Maybe you need to step up and call her what you meant to in the first place (maybe whore? Slut? I don’t know but I am sure you do).

Isn’t it interesting how many of you quickly blame Cal for “skirt chasing” yet it takes two sexual partners to agree to have sex in the first place. Shagging (I am curious how that slang phrase for sex came about and I am going to look that one up!) every woman in sight (well why didn’t just have a go with Torres when she came on to him? If you are going to talk about this and you have already said he has no morals when it comes to sex, don’t bother covering your tracks) might be his way to deal with his life and he makes no excuses for the way he acts in that manner so what’s the big deal? @M: You sure have it in for Cal and actually for TR. If I’m understanding you here you think Cal is pretty worthless as a human being? I mean you detest him right? When did you like him? Please forgive me for not knowing what this means (all the other stuff I have written about what you have said isn’t included) “what Terror” when referring to the writers supposedly changing his character around (take a look back at some older episodes) in this season. I don’t know how to address what you are saying unless I have a clear understanding of what you are saying.

Now this is really interesting! @M “But I wouldn’t want Foster to get it serious with someone who throws 1 million into a stupid roulette” (wheel?) is it a comment on him gambling or a comment on what he does with his life? @M and then this “Lightman is simply not good enough for her. (Something he obviously knows very well).” If he obviously knows he is not good enough for Gillian doesn’t that give him some sort of ‘morality credit” (I put that in quotes since morality is subjective)?

Yeah, sorry I have picked on you @M, ok no, not really that was a lie. I picked on you because I didn’t like what you were saying and you took extra extra time to bash Cal and TR, my favorite character on the show and one of my favorite actors.

    :)

I am very disappointed. Why can’t the 2 main characters be together? It’s not like it’s gonna be the end of the show. Just make it to where they don’t want anyone to know about them. That way the sexual tension is still there (maybe more so) in the office but then u also have the story after they have figured out the case and everybody is pleased. It’s a win win situation. U can’t lose if u do that. It is funny to see lightman acting all wierd when he meets gillians boyfriend. But now that’s over….time to move on and see cal scare him away. And realize now that Gillian is dating again that he’s jealous and love Gillian with all his heart and asks her out to see where it goes. And yes cal is a manwhore….but if there is one person that can put a leash on him it would be Gillian.

I want Cal and Gillian to be together… but I think its Fosters turn to be jealous… Cal is jealous about Dave as of right now… but i think tht Cal needs a woman… and he needs to just date her… like go out to dinner… he never has a long term relationship… he just nails her than its over and i dont like tht if he has a woman it should last… Like Gillian is with her boyfriend

    August 4, 2010 @ 4:38 pm

  35. Alex

I think Cal & Gillian have as much sexual chemistry as a brick and a wall. They are good friends and have great chemistry as colleagues & friends. Let’s leave it at that for now. Too bad the sex scene with Clara was non existent. That would have brought in the ratings. I woudn’t mind if the Clara character was recurring, she was good. She could come in, hand Lightman a check and they’d do it in the cube. This actress is very similar in facial features & name to Monica. I’m not sure that is a wise choice. Clara was Sharon Stone hot & this woman, going by her Imdb pix looks at the opposite end of the spectrum in the sexy department. But again, we’ll suspend judgment till we see her first scenes.

As for the above childish comment to “only watch it online for Kelli” we know you’ll be watching it on TV 1st, then online, then buying the DVD. It’s just characters on a TV show, and I hope their lack of relationship doesn’t affect how well you sleep at night.

    September 1, 2010 @ 3:57 pm

  36. Alex

Sounds like Gilly wrote her own TV show in her own mind. Wow. There’s something to be said for the arrogance of pretending to know better than the writers, huh? Maybe when the Lightman & Foster action figures come out these teeny boppers can make their own movie the way they like it.

I wouldn’t mind waiting till the Lie To Me movie reunion, somewhere around 2023 for the “ship” to sail. That’s right. No Callian until then. Not even another kiss. None.

    September 1, 2010 @ 4:05 pm

  37. Natalie M.

I like Cal and Gillian together as much as the next person. BUT, realistically, it’d end up being a showkiller. It ALWAYS is. What we LOVE is the tension. We like the possibility–the are they/aren’t they? of it all. Taking that away via ANY love interest would be a mistake.

And agreed. I’m sick of seeing Cal have sex. Well, half-sick of it at least. Recurring is fine. Regular will suck and I’d probably stop watching. And I think Gillian should get some flirtatious attention, too.

Play up the tension on BOTH ends.

All I know is that in the final episode, they better end up together. Or i’m going to feel like I wasted my time.

    September 13, 2010 @ 8:27 pm

  38. Natalie M.

This is old now, but this is to Julie in particular.

What we are seeing on the show is the Angel/Whore complex. Every woman that comes on the show is either an Angel (Foster) or a Whore (Clara, Poppy, even Zoe).

[Refer to Gilbert and Gubar's Madwoman in the Attic to understand the context completely]–

I’m tired of seeing the dichotomy so played out. Gillian is The Good Girl. These other women are the Whores. I would like to see Gillian crossover a bit–

I think it would be nice.

And indeed, I am a “shipper.” But, more than that, watching dudes hook up with random chicks is NOT why I watch Lie to Me. I watch the show for the SCIENCE (it’s the only “crime drama” I watch). And I watch it for the Unresolved Sexual Tension between numerous characters. Key word: unresolved.

So sick of watching Lightman bang chicks. Or hearing about his escapades. It’s BORING.
