MTV Movies Blog Talks Renewal, Season Two, and More with Tim Roth

8 December 2009 at 3:58 pm

Rick Marshall sat down recently with Tim Roth for the MTV Movies Blog. Below are some highlights.

With reviews trending positively for the series and a new batch of episodes on the way, I spoke to Roth about making the jump to television and what truths “Lie To Me” fans can expect to uncover as the season progresses.

“I’ve never seen a television crew get their phones out so quick,” said Roth of the November 24 news that the series would receive a full pickup for the second season. “The phones came out in a flurry, and everyone was trying to get a good signal. It was very, very good news.”

As for what the future holds for “Lie To Me,” Roth wasn’t giving away many plot points. However, he did say that the relationship between his character and Lightman’s colleague, Dr. Gillian Foster (played by Kelli Williams), will play a big role in the stories to come.

“On an upcoming episode, we really unravel Foster and Lightman and get to a point where we understand how they got together, how they became a team — and there is a lot of potential for a relationship,” teased Roth. “They’re coming in a cluster of episodes, which is good because we need to make sure that their relationship is in the right place. I’m really looking forward to it. I love working with Kelli.”

Between this and the Mr. Beaks interview its really starting to look like Roth is accepting his role now. In all his early interviews it seemed like a chore, simply a means to an end but now it seems that hes starting to embrace it which I think is a very positive sign for the future of the show.

After reading this… I want to be put to sleep after Monday and then woken up in the spring! We’ve been asking and waiting for so long to find out the history of the relationship between Lightman and Foster and it sound like we will be getting what we need in the spring! This is the AWESOMEST news ever!!! The hard part is going to be waiting until spring…. <3 Callian <3

@McNulty Good point and another thing I noticed is Tim Roth is starting to say how much he enjoys working with Kelli Williams. In previous interviews, he used to only say that about Jennifer Beals.
    :)

This is great news, I’m loving Tim’s enthusiasm for the show – especially as I seem to be seeing more and more stuff on the net about the show potentially being cancelled at the end of season 2!! :-(

    December 13, 2009 @ 3:49 pm

@meem1770 – Glad you enjoyed the interview. As far as cancellation goes: I wouldn’t worry too much about that. In fact, a pickup for a third season seems more likely than unlikely. Though, obviously nothing’s set in stone, and these things change. If you haven’t seen them yet, there are a couple sites out there that provide a renew/cancel index, with results calculated based on a number of factors. One that I often point people to is at TV by the Numbers. That might be helpful.

Also regarding a third season: The recent announcement that So You Think You Can Dance won’t be airing in the fall actually frees up some room on the schedule.

The other comment I’ve heard some people make is regarding Lie to Me returning on Friday nights in the spring. I would have to say that I see that as unlikely, though we won’t know until Fox announces its return date.

Squees are going to kill me. Soon. Please stop!
Nah, not really, there is no need to stop. Just make the waiting period shorter.
