@K: That's interesting... Perhaps that was a factor as well.

@Sue: It is too bad the lower ratings came on this ep. Not that you'd want them for any, but this was a particularly strong episode, I thought.

@Radam: I wouldn't worry too much. I'm sure Fox realizes this is a tough time slot. While it probably hasn't been performing as well as they'd hoped considering the House lead-in, it has been doing respectably well. And, the numbers you mentioned sound about right... haven't checked in a while.

Honestly, I think one of the things I've had an issue with when it comes to Fox is that the show has been moved around. It's only aired now 18 episodes, but it's been in three different time slots. To me, that's not the best way to build a solid audience. I think it would've been wiser to have kept it after Idol for a longer period of time, allowing it to build a stronger audience... (such as was done with House). Then, once the audience was established, you could move it to another time slot... But not such a competitive one as 9:00 Monday! :) With the reduced order of "Past Life", I'd be interested to see if Fox decides to move Lie to Me back to a post-Idol slot. It's a strong show, and it has all of the makings to be huge... A strong cast, great writers, and talented showrunners and producers. I think Fox just needs to give it a little more of a boost.

@SciFiGeekNJ: That was my thought exactly about gaining from its lead-in. It's been averaging 7-8 million viewers this season, so this isn't a huge fall. And, with the factors already discussed, it isn't shocking either.

All in all, this is what I'd say (going along with @3rdrocker's comment): You can't draw water from an empty well... If there's 18 million people watching DWTS and 11 million watching TBBT, that's a pretty good chunk of viewers. (And if I'm not mistaken, that was an increase even for DWTS viewership.) Hopefully this is just a one-time decrease. Not good timing considering Fox's seeming indecision about renewal, obviously. But, as people continue to speak well of it, and perhaps more critics get behind it, things may turn out all right yet.

I almost missed the episode due to my Time Warner cable TV listings stating baseball was on from 8pm onward on Fox - the playoff game that may have been needed, but obviously wasn't. Definitely something that could've had a big effect on ratings if this occurred across the country...
I would've been SO angry if I'd missed it - yet another AWESOME episode!!!

What I recall from season I is that 8.4 - 8.8 millions were presenting a solid audience number. Which was more than fine! There were at lest 3 episodes with rating in 10 million viewers and even one ("Do no harm" if I'm not mistaken) made it to 11.2. Stable 8 is better then present situation.

Now I begin to worry... damn!

Maybe I'm just reading these numbers wrong but I don't think these numbers are that bad without House as a lead in and going against the second hour of Dancing with the Stars.

And it actually gained viewers from the So You Think You Can Dance lead in.

It's really a shame that the ratings were low, as this was such a stellar episode. Tim R and co. deserve better.
