Alan Sepinwall Discusses Season Two with Shawn Ryan

28 September 2009 at 7:48 am

Nj.com reporter Alan Sepinwall recently interviewed Shawn Ryan about season two and his new role on the show. The good news? Though Sepinwall had viewed the premiere, it wasn’t in his “regular viewing rotation”. Now? It is. I’m sure he (and we) won’t be disappointed with the changes Shawn Ryan’s made. Below are some highlights of his article.

Ryan on the Direction of the Show and Having Tim Roth

“I could tell that the science was driving the stories more than the characters driving the stories,” he says. “I thought that the science was cool, but I didn’t know if it was enough to hang an entire series on. While we haven’t diminished the science, I would say that science isn’t the first thing we approach this season.”

And in focusing on character first and science second, Ryan gets to take advantage of his dynamic leading man. Many procedurals have brought in great actors without giving them much to play (Gary Sinise on “CSI:NY,” for instance). Ryan doesn’t want to repeat that mistake.

“You’re going to be hard-pressed to find a better actor on TV than Tim Roth,” he says. “We’re going to try to put him through a bunch of different ringers this season.”

Sepinwall’s Thoughts

When “Lie to Me” debuted, I thought it was a solidly-executed show that I didn’t particularly need to ever watch again. Since Ryan came on board, it’s moved into my regular viewing rotation. So what, I ask him, would he tell other viewers like me who checked it out in the spring, then checked out, period?

“I would say that hopefully, the things that you liked last year are still there, but we dive much deeper into the characters.”
